A local Norman shelter is struggling to keep supplies stocked as the number of cats in their care skyrockets faster than adoptions are happening. Second Chance Animal Sanctuary is home to 88 cats and kittens waiting to be adopted. But right now, their main concern is providing food and litter for all the cats they're housing.
"With so many cats in our program we are running out of supplies desperately," says Second Chance Director, Rose Grimm. Although rising costs and overpopulation are hitting the Norman shelter hard, their mission remains the same. "Second chance is trying to save as many as we can because all animals deserve a second chance," she says.
The shelter replaces euthanasia with rehabilitation, taking in surrendered animals and removing animals from kill shelters. "Shelters across the state are euthanizing,” Grimm says. “Some are euthanizing up to 30 animals a day. And it's something that second chance can come in and save lives with." She says it’s simply the right thing to do.
"Good animals, just like good people, deserve the opportunity to thrive and exist. These animals need a voice and we are the voice. It's what we do,” says Grimm. “It's not about euthanizing, it's not about just getting rid of the problem, it's about fixing the problem as a community and as a culture."
But Grimm says Second Chance needs the communities help to keep their mission going. The shelter is accepting any and all cat or kitten related donations, and adoptions are always encouraged."All I have consistently seen is good animals just needing that second chance and that opportunity," says Grimm.
Donations can be dropped off at Second Chance Animal Sanctuary in Norman during business hours Wednesdays through Sundays, with no appointment necessary for adoptions.
