Organizers of the second annual Bark & Roll hope for good weather this year.
Despite rain pouring down during most of last year's inaugural event in October, Second Chance Animal Sanctuary leaders considered it a success. Second Chance, who hosts the event as one of their biggest fundraisers for the year, said the event raised around $15,000 for the shelter.
The event is scheduled from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hollywood Corners, 4712 N. Porter Ave. in Norman.
The National Weather Service is projecting a 20% chance of rain Saturday. Even if it rains, Marilyn Butler, president of the Second Chance board, said the event will proceed as scheduled.
"The thing we had to contend with last year was the rain," Butler said. "We still had a great time and a great turnout. We're just hoping we don't have to deal with that this year."
The free public event encompasses a variety of activities for participants.
The event kicks off with a canine costume contest at 3:30 p.m., where participants can dress up their dogs in costumes and have them compete with other costumed dogs for prizes.
Butler said the canine costume contest was one of the highlights of last year's event.
"It was so fun to see all the dogs dressed up," Butler said. "Some of the owners even dressed up the same way as their dogs. I really hope it doesn't rain, because that should be a cool contest."
Along with the costume contest, there will be a silent auction and several raffle tables.
There also will be a 50/50 drawing, where participants put money into a pot and raffle for it at the end of the night.
The winner will take home half of the cash.
Tickets for a barbecue dinner are $25. The meal will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. There also will be a "fill-the-van" event, where participants can bring shelter donations. All proceeds for the event will benefit Second Chance.
Second Chance is a nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter, where homeless pets are taken and microchipped.
Butler said last year's proceeds had a big impact on continuing the shelter.
"It's really hard for a nonprofit to survive in today's world," Butler said. "But Norman has always been supportive of Second Chance, and a lot of people have taken our animals home with them."
